Merry Christmas to my steampunk friends!

Here’s a fun Second Life video to celebrate this joyous day, made by Lokiboy.

Steam Santa visits New Babbage, the virtual steampunk world in Second Life. Watch as Santa flies in on his steam rocket sleigh! This video also shows the wonderful sims in New Babbage, which boasts quite an impressive design and looks like a great place to visit. Well done, Lokiboy!

I hope everyone has a very steamy Christmas!

Steampunk Santa Claus Costumes

Ho ho ho! It’s a steampunk Santa Claus costume!

These costumes are made by Twin Roses Designs. They have an awesome selection of custom costumes, with an entire category dedicated to Victorian fashion.

The Steampunk Santa Claus costume includes:

Steampunk Santa Hat: Based on early 20th century aviator hats, this hat is made from red pleather and completely lined with white velboa short pile faux fur.

Steampunk Santa Coat: Based on a 1910 pattern for a military trench coat, this unlined organic cotton chili pepper colored double-breasted coat features 12 gold tone metal buttons, back vent, two large external pockets, and buttons and tabs at each sleeve. White velboa short pile faux fur makes up the uniquely styled collar and the facings in each cuff and inside each side of the center front. The Steampunk Santa coat is shown here with cuffs turned back to show the facings.

Santa Breeches: Made from chili pepper colored organic cotton twill to match the coat above, these unlined button fly breeches are based on 1910 military style breeches with wide thighs, and are slender at the calf and ankles – just right for fitting into spats or gaiters!

Gaiters (or spats): Made from black pleather, these 1910 style gaiters are fully lined with cotton twill, and snap up the side with eleven nickel snaps.

Check out Mrs. Claus! So very classy, I love it.

Look Inside a Steampunk House

Posted by: manny    in Art, Gadgets, Ideas

Here’s an amazing look into a custom steampunk house owned by Bruce Rosenbaum, who specializes in Victorian style restorations.

I can’t get over how cool this is! He has steampunk gadgets and furniture throughout his home, including copper dog bowls and water filtration system, a steampunk entertainment system, telephone, thermometer, and numerous pieces of clever artwork. I can’t help but thinkg that this house would be a great place to film a movie.

Visit SteampunkWorkshop to view all the photos and read about the home tour.

Steampunk Featured in Time Magazine

Steampunk
Source

The Dec. 14, 2009 issue of Time Magazine has a wonderful article about steampunk.

Lev Grossman does a great job explaining the concept to the uninitiated, and talks about the origins of steampunk and its rapid growth into mainstream pop-culture.

The same way punk took back music, steampunk reclaims technology for the masses. It substitutes metal gears for silicon, pneumatic tubes for 3G and wi-fi. It maximizes what was miniaturized and makes visible what was hidden. Where the iPhone is all stainless steel and high-gloss plastic, steampunk is brass and wood and leather. Steampunk isn’t mass-produced; it’s bespoke and unique, and if you don’t like it, you can tinker with it till you do.

Be sure to read this article! It’s not too long and it’s packed with steamy goodness. You can read the full article for free online at Time.com.

Steampunk Terrarium

   Posted by: manny    in Gadgets

steampunk-terrarrium

Wow, look at this work of beauty. This would look AWESOME sitting on my desk, sigh. These steampunk terrarriums are listed for sale on Etsy. Unfortunately, it looks like they’re out of stock at the moment.

This is the largest of our “steamed” light bulb terrariums with a bulb measuring 3 3/4″ x 7 3/4″. It stands 10 1/4″ tall as mounted on the SteamPunked stand made of a simulated cherrywood base, copper tubing, chemistry glass, an adjustable 4x magnifying glass and other ornate trimmings. The bulb houses a small solar powered LED bulb that lights itself when all other lights go out and throws a dreamlike shadow pattern on your walls making the perfect night light. It can also be turned on and off with the old fashioned knife switch mounted to the base.

Light
Indirect light in a sunny room is all that is needed. If there is enough light to cast a slight shadow or to read by, that is usually enough for your terrarium plants. They also grow beautifully beneath fluorescent light, so they’re a great way to grow plants in an office.

Water
Just a couple of drops of distilled or bottled drinking water every other month is all that is needed.

I want one!!
