Steampunk Webcomic Set in Africa

   Posted by: manny

You should definitely check out Virtuoso, an awesome steampunk webcomic set in Africa. The story is created and written by Jon Munger, and drawn by artist Krista Brennan.

Virtuoso was first released in March, 2010, and to date there are over 20 issues. This is a very original idea and a great story!

Virtuoso is an alternate history of an Africa that never existed, one run by steel and springs, commanded by vast matriarchies and past the height of its culture.

Virtuoso is the story of Jnembi Osse, a professional weapons manufacturer for the most powerful empire in the world, and how her private rebellion becomes a full scale international incident.

Mechanical Steampunk Wing Costume

   Posted by: manny

Here’s an incredible costume by Brian Matthews, also known as piratebrine on Youtube.

His costume is that of a steampunk explorer, and the way the wings on his back is very cool. But when he spreads his wings? Wow! I’m ready to believe he can fly away.

So cool, great work!

What a work of beauty! This steampunk bicycle was spotted recently by RidingPretty at the Maker Faire.

Absolutely incredible! Heh, now all it needs is some kind of balloon attachment that converts it into an air ship.

The World’s First Steampunk Superhero?

   Posted by: manny

ghostsofmanhattan_cover

This is the cover of George Mann’s Ghosts Of Manhattan. Pyr Books is advertising this as “The World’s First Superhero.” Sounds great, I’m interested!

1926. New York. The Roaring Twenties. Jazz. Flappers. Prohibition. Yet things have developed differently to established history. America is in the midst of a cold war with a British Empire that has only just buried Queen Victoria, her life artificially preserved to the age of 107. A series of targeted murders are occurring all over the city. This is a time in need of heroes. It is a time for The Ghost.

Here’s a paragraph from the novel about his super goggles. This looks fun!

Reaching up, the Ghost felt under the brim of his hat until his fingers located the rim of his goggles. He tugged them down over his eyes, turning the lenses slowly away from the bridge of his nose. Everything took on a red sheen. Targeting circles floated, disembodied, before his vision. He cranked the lenses once again, tiny cogs whirring inside the device, and the view suddenly magnified, becoming sharp and bright. He could see the sidewalk five stories below as if he were only a few feet away.

Ghosts of Manhatten is for sale on Amazon, and you can read a 6-chapter preview from Pyr Books.

The incredible Steampunk World’s Fair took place last weekend in New Jersey, and I wanted to show some photos of all the amazing costumes. I wasn’t able to attend, but I hope I can next year!

I really like this Flickr slideshow tool, it’s very handy. Aren’t the costumes just awesome? Be sure to head over to the Flickr Pool to view all the photos.

Outland Armour Suffers from Flood Damage

   Posted by: manny

outlanders

The good people of Outland Armour, who are absolute legends in the steampunk world, are dealing with a huge setback from recent flood damage in Tennessee.

These guys are from Atlanta, but they were in Tennessee for the Middle Tennessee Anime Convention and fell victim to the major flooding that hit the area.

They are accepting donations to help cover the costs of their bus and lost gear. What a terrible shame! Wow, that just sucks so much! You can read about their troubles on their blog.

Good luck, Guys! We all hope you can recover from this tragedy.

bus

As you may know, we were in Nashville, Tennessee for the Middle Tennessee Anime Convention (MTAC) this past weekend. You may also have seen Nashville in the news over the last couple of days; there have been massive floods there after 2 straight days of rain on Saturday and Sunday. Our hotel was actually cut off on all sides by 5 – 15 feet of water, and we were finally ferried out by a fleet of volunteers and Coast Guard boats early this morning.

At this time, all of our steampunk props and costumes, as well as all of our luggage are still in Nashville, some in our hotel room and some in our bus which is now flooded in the parking lot under 5 feet of water. We do not know the status of our gear inside the bus. We waded into chest deep water last night to move things to the top storage rack, as far away from the rising flood waters as possible, and we are hoping it is still safe. But, when we were ferried out this morning, authorities were telling us that they estimated the waters would continue to rise at least another 1 – 2 feet before finally coming to a stop.

If you are able to donate to their cause, you may use this handy widget….
